Alors que la guerre faisait rage et qu\u2019une grande quantit\u00e9 de Hommes \u00e9taient partis combattre outre-mer, le propri\u00e9taire des Cubs de Chicago, Philip Wrigley, croyait que le baseball tomberait dans l\u2019oubli au d\u00e9but des ann\u00e9es 1940. Afin de maintenir l\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat des amateurs, le l\u00e9gendaire dirigeant a envoy\u00e9 des recruteurs \u00e0 travers l\u2019Am\u00e9rique du nord avec comme objectif de d\u00e9nicher les meilleures joueuses afin de cr\u00e9er la Ligue de professionnelle de baseball f\u00e9minin (All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, AAGPBL). Gagnant des salaires variant de 55 $ \u00e0 150 $ par semaine, les femmes ont joint les rangs de quatre formations lors de la premi\u00e8re ann\u00e9e d\u2019existence de la Ligue : les Peaches de Rockford, les Belles de Racine, les Comets de Kenosha et les Blue Sox de South Bend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La Ligue a exist\u00e9 pendant 11 campagnes, de 1943 \u00e0 1954. Les femmes \u00e9taient alors entra\u00een\u00e9es autant sur le terrain qu\u2019\u00e0 l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur de celui-ci, recevant m\u00eame des cours de charme au cours du camp d\u2019entra\u00eenement. Leurs uniformes consistaient \u00e0 une courte robe avec les bas jusqu\u2019au genou, des souliers \u00e0 crampons et une casquette. Dans les premi\u00e8res saisons, elles utilisaient une balle de la dimension d\u2019une balle-molle avant d\u2019utiliser une balle de la dimension r\u00e9glementaire et de permettre le lancer par-dessus l\u2019\u00e9paule d\u00e8s 1948. Cette m\u00eame ann\u00e9e, la popularit\u00e9 de la Ligue a augment\u00e9, dix \u00e9quipes \u00e9tant alors dans les rangs et plus d\u2019un million de spectateurs ont franchi les tourniquets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Avec 64 femmes venant du Canada, soit dix pourcents des joueuses, le pays \u00e9tait bien repr\u00e9sent\u00e9 dans la AAGPBL et plusieurs d\u2019entre elles sont devenues des joueuses vedettes. Glady \u00ab Terrie \u00bb Davis, de Toronto (Ontario), a gagn\u00e9 le premier championnat des frappeuses. L\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat envers la Ligue a connu un nouvel essor avec la sortie du film \u00ab Une ligue en jupons \u00bb en 1992 mettant en vedette Madonna, Tom Hanks et Geena Davis. Les rumeurs disent que le personnage jou\u00e9 par Davis \u00e9tait en fait calqu\u00e9 sur Mary Baker, receveuse \u00e9toile des Blue Sox originaire de Regina (Saskatchewan).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
