C'est un plaisir d'\u00eatre intronis\u00e9 au Temple de la renomm\u00e9e du baseball canadien. \u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>N\u00e9 le 20 octobre 1940 \u00e0 St. Catharines (Ontario), Paul Runge a \u00e9t\u00e9 un arbitre tr\u00e8s respect\u00e9 dans la Ligue nationale de baseball pendant 25 saisons, de 1973 \u00e0 1997.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Il a commenc\u00e9 sa carri\u00e8re dans le baseball professionnel en tant que voltigeur et receveur dans les organisations des Colt 45s de Houston et des Angels de Los Angeles de 1962 \u00e0 1964, avant de d\u00e9cider de suivre les traces de son p\u00e8re, Ed Runge, et de se lancer dans une carri\u00e8re d'arbitre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Il a perfectionn\u00e9 ses comp\u00e9tences en tant qu'arbitre dans les ligues mineures pendant neuf saisons avant d'acc\u00e9der \u00e0 la Ligue nationale en 1973. Au cours de son quart de si\u00e8cle en tant qu'arbitre dans les Majeures, Runge est devenu l'un des plus estim\u00e9s du sport. Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 s\u00e9lectionn\u00e9 pour arbitrer neuf s\u00e9ries de championnat de la Ligue nationale, quatre S\u00e9ries mondiales (1979, 1984, 1989 et 1993) et trois matchs des \u00e9toiles (1978, 1986, 1994).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L'un des moments forts de sa carri\u00e8re a \u00e9t\u00e9 d'\u00eatre l'arbitre au troisi\u00e8me but lorsque le lanceur droitier des Expos, Charlie Lea, a r\u00e9alis\u00e9 un match sans point ni coup s\u00fbr le 10 mai 1981. C'\u00e9tait le premier match sans point ni coup s\u00fbr r\u00e9alis\u00e9 par un lanceur des Expos au Stade olympique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus de 12 ans plus tard, le 23 octobre 1993, Runge \u00e9tait arbitre au deuxi\u00e8me but lorsque le frappeur des Blue Jays, Joe Carter, a frapp\u00e9 son coup de circuit d\u00e9cisif contre le releveur des Phillies, Mitch Williams, donnant ainsi la S\u00e9rie mondiale aux Jays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Au total, Runge a arbitr\u00e9 3 194 matchs de saison r\u00e9guli\u00e8re de la MLB, 43 matchs de s\u00e9ries de championnat et 22 matchs de la S\u00e9rie mondiale. Seuls trois Canadiens ont arbitr\u00e9 plus de matchs dans le baseball majeur : Bob Emslie (Guelph, ON), Jim McKean (Montr\u00e9al, QC) et Ernie Quigley (Newcastle, N.-B.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>En 1998, Runge est devenu directeur des arbitres de la Ligue nationale.
