L'id\u00e9e de la Coupe Pearson a \u00e9t\u00e9 attribu\u00e9e \u00e0 Charles Bronfman (intronis\u00e9 au Temple en 1984). Bronfman, originaire de Montr\u00e9al, \u00e9tait pr\u00e9sident du conseil d'administration et principal propri\u00e9taire des Expos. L'objectif de la Coupe Pearson \u00e9tait de r\u00e9unir les deux \u00e9quipes canadiennes \u00e0 la mi-saison pour qu'elles se disputent la supr\u00e9matie du baseball canadien. Le match hors-concours est con\u00e7u comme un moyen d'inspirer la fiert\u00e9 nationale pour les deux \u00e9quipes de la MLB qui se sentent typiquement canadiennes. Chaque ann\u00e9e, la comp\u00e9tition se d\u00e9roule alternativement \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al et \u00e0 Toronto, la coupe accompagnant l'\u00e9quipe gagnante \u00e0 son domicile.<\/span><\/p>

Il y avait \u00e9galement un aspect caritatif derri\u00e8re ces matchs, puisque les recettes de chaque partie \u00e9taient distribu\u00e9es \u00e0 des organisations de baseball amateur au Canada. 35 % des recettes sont revers\u00e9es aux f\u00e9d\u00e9rations de baseball amateur du Qu\u00e9bec et de l'Ontario et les 30 % restants aux f\u00e9d\u00e9rations nationales.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

La Coupe Pearson a \u00e9t\u00e9 nomm\u00e9e en l'honneur du 14e Premier ministre du Canada, Lester B. Pearson, qui a occup\u00e9 le poste de 1963 \u00e0 1968. Cet homme politique \u00e9tait tr\u00e8s impliqu\u00e9 dans le baseball et a \u00e9t\u00e9 pr\u00e9sident honoraire des Expos de Montr\u00e9al apr\u00e8s son mandat de Premier ministre.<\/span><\/p>

Pearson \u00e9tait un athl\u00e8te talentueux avec une passion certaine pour le sport. Dans sa jeunesse, il a jou\u00e9 au basketball, au hockey, au football, \u00e0 la crosse, au rugby et, surtout, au baseball. Apr\u00e8s avoir jou\u00e9 au baseball pendant la Premi\u00e8re Guerre mondiale, Pearson et son fr\u00e8re Vaughan ont tous deux rejoint les Maple Leafs de Guelph de la Ligue Intercounty (IBL) de l'Ontario.<\/span><\/p>

Lester B. Pearson \u00e9tait d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9 au moment de l'arriv\u00e9e des Blue Jays dans la MLB, mais le troph\u00e9e de la comp\u00e9tition canadienne annuelle a \u00e9t\u00e9 nomm\u00e9 en son honneur et porte son portrait grav\u00e9 dans l'argent.
