Les compagnies de tabac ont \u00e9t\u00e9 les premi\u00e8res \u00e0 produire des cartes de baseball \u00e0 la fin du XIXe si\u00e8cle et au d\u00e9but du XXe si\u00e8cle. Ces cartes \u00e9taient ins\u00e9r\u00e9es dans les paquets de cigarettes, en partie pour renforcer l'emballage, mais aussi pour fid\u00e9liser la client\u00e8le \u00e0 la marque. Dans les ann\u00e9es 1930 et 1940, des fabricants de gommes \u00e0 m\u00e2cher tels que Goudey Gum et Play Ball ont fait leur apparition sur le march\u00e9. Une entreprise en particulier allait dominer le march\u00e9 des cartes \u00e0 collectionner : Topps. \u00c0 partir des ann\u00e9es 1950, Topps a innov\u00e9 dans la conception des cartes et a \u00e9tabli la norme pour la production moderne de cartes de baseball. L'entreprise a finalement supprim\u00e9 la gomme, invoquant des plaintes concernant les taches roses qu'elle laissait sur les cartes et la qualit\u00e9 d\u00e9clinante de la gomme elle-m\u00eame.
