Bien que cette exposition porte principalement sur le baseball \u00e0 Toronto, nous devons d'abord remonter \u00e0 la fin des ann\u00e9es 1800 pour nous int\u00e9resser \u00e0 un autre groupe de joueurs et de personnalit\u00e9s du baseball qui, \u00e0 bien des \u00e9gards, ont ouvert la voie aux individus dont nous allons parler dans cette exposition. Commen\u00e7ons par nous int\u00e9resser aux rebels de l'Association am\u00e9ricaine de 1880.<\/p>

L'Association nationale des joueurs de baseball professionnel a \u00e9t\u00e9 fond\u00e9e en 1871 en tant que premi\u00e8re ligue professionnelle de baseball. La ligue a connu cinq saisons difficiles, marqu\u00e9es par le mauvais comportement des joueurs et des dirigeants et par un manque de pouvoir disciplinaire pour mettre fin \u00e0 ces comportements. En 1876, plusieurs \u00e9quipes, men\u00e9es par William Hulbert des White Stockings de Chicago, ont abandonn\u00e9 l'Association nationale, alors en difficult\u00e9s, et ont fond\u00e9 leur propre ligue. La Ligue nationale \u00e9tait \u00e9troitement g\u00e9r\u00e9e par Hulbert, qui imposait des r\u00e8gles strictes aux \u00e9quipes et obligeait les stades \u00e0 se mettre en conformit\u00e9. En r\u00e9ponse, les Red Stockings ont cr\u00e9\u00e9 une toute nouvelle ligue : l'Association am\u00e9ricaine. Cette derni\u00e8re \u00e9tait tout ce que la Ligue nationale n'\u00e9tait pas : moins ch\u00e8re (25 cents pour un billet au lieu de 50 cents), plus accessible (les matchs du dimanche \u00e9taient inclus dans le calendrier) et la vente d'alcool \u00e9tait un \u00e9l\u00e9ment fondamental de la ligue, car elle permettait de financer les \u00e9quipes. Les propri\u00e9taires de la Ligue nationale, qui m\u00e9prisaient cette organisation rebelle, lui ont donn\u00e9 le surnom de \u00ab la Ligue de la bi\u00e8re et du whisky \u00bb. Malgr\u00e9 le rejet initial des propri\u00e9taires de la Ligue nationale, la nouvelle Association am\u00e9ricaine a connu un grand succ\u00e8s. Non seulement les matchs \u00e9taient plus abordables et plus accessibles, mais ils \u00e9taient aussi plus divertissants! Au cours de sa premi\u00e8re ann\u00e9e d'existence, l'Association am\u00e9ricaine a g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9 quatre fois plus de profits que la Ligue nationale. C'\u00e9tait le premier signe de l'importance essentielle de l'alcool et des parties jou\u00e9es le dimanche pour le baseball. En 1891, cette ligue de la bi\u00e8re et du whisky a cess\u00e9 ses activit\u00e9s et, la saison suivante, la Ligue nationale a recommenc\u00e9 \u00e0 autoriser la vente de bi\u00e8re dans ses stades. Bien que de courte dur\u00e9e, l'Association am\u00e9ricaine a prouv\u00e9 \u00e0 quel point la vente de bi\u00e8re et les matchs du dimanche \u00e9taient essentiels au succ\u00e8s financier d'une \u00e9quipe de baseball.<\/p>

En tant que membre des Browns de St. Louis de 1884 \u00e0 1889, puis \u00e0 nouveau en 1891, Tip O'Neill (Woodstock, ON) a jou\u00e9 la majeure partie de sa carri\u00e8re dans la ligue dite \u00ab bi\u00e8re et whisky \u00bb.
