Aujourd'hui, il est difficile d'imaginer Toronto sans le SkyDome (aujourd'hui le Rogers Centre) ou m\u00eame sans l'ancien Exhibition Stadium. Pourtant, bien avant l'arriv\u00e9e du baseball majeur, Toronto entretenait d\u00e9j\u00e0 une relation privil\u00e9gi\u00e9e avec ce sport. L'histoire du baseball professionnel \u00e0 Toronto d\u00e9bute avec les Maple Leafs de Toronto (\u00e0 ne pas confondre avec l'\u00e9quipe de hockey du m\u00eame nom), un club de baseball des ligues mineures qui \u00e9voluait dans la Ligue internationale. Fond\u00e9e en 1895, l'\u00e9quipe dispute d'abord ses matchs au Hanlan's Point Stadium, sur l'\u00eele de Toronto, avant de s'installer dans son propre stade, le Maple Leaf Stadium. En 1951, l'\u00e9quipe est achet\u00e9e par Jack Kent Cooke<\/a> , \u00e9galement propri\u00e9taire des Redskins de Washington et des Lakers de Los Angeles. Sous sa direction, le baseball conna\u00eet un essor remarquable \u00e0 Toronto. Durant ses douze ann\u00e9es \u00e0 la t\u00eate du club, plus de 3,3 millions de spectateurs assistent aux matchs des Maple Leafs. La saison 1952 marque un sommet : plus de <\/span>446,000<\/span> amateurs franchissent les tourniquets du stade, un chiffre sup\u00e9rieur \u00e0 l'assistance enregistr\u00e9e par plusieurs \u00e9quipes des Ligues majeures cette ann\u00e9e-l\u00e0. \u00c0 titre de comparaison, cela repr\u00e9sentait pr\u00e8s de la moiti\u00e9 de la population de Toronto \u00e0 l'\u00e9poque. Apr\u00e8s plusieurs d\u00e9cennies de succ\u00e8s, cette populaire \u00e9quipe de niveau AAA d\u00e9m\u00e9nage \u00e0 Louisville, au Kentucky, en 1967. Toutefois, l'h\u00e9ritage des Maple Leafs de Toronto perdure. Une nouvelle \u00e9quipe portant ce nom est fond\u00e9e par la suite et poursuit encore aujourd'hui ses activit\u00e9s au parc Christie Pits, dans la Ligue canadienne.<\/span><\/p>

Gr\u00e2ce au succ\u00e8s des Maple Leafs de Toronto et \u00e0 celui des nombreuses ligues amateurs de la r\u00e9gion, le baseball occupait d\u00e9j\u00e0 une place importante dans la culture sportive torontoise. L'arriv\u00e9e des Expos de Montr\u00e9al en 1969 avait d\u00e9montr\u00e9 qu'une franchise canadienne pouvait attirer et passionner les foules, tandis qu'\u00e0 Toronto, les bases d'une \u00e9ventuelle \u00e9quipe des Ligues majeures \u00e9taient d\u00e9j\u00e0 solidement en place.
