{"id":10713,"date":"2013-02-19T19:50:10","date_gmt":"2013-02-20T00:50:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/baseballhalloffame.ca\/?p=10713"},"modified":"2013-02-19T19:50:10","modified_gmt":"2013-02-20T00:50:10","slug":"bell-and-raines-to-headline-canadian-ball-halls-class-of-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/baseballhalloffame.ca\/fr\/bell-and-raines-to-headline-canadian-ball-halls-class-of-2013\/","title":{"rendered":"BELL AND RAINES TO HEADLINE CANADIAN BALL HALL&#8217;S CLASS OF 2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Rob Ducey, Tom Cheek and Nat Bailey will also be honoured in a ceremony to take place at 11 a.m. ET on Saturday, June 29 on the museum\u2019s ceremonial grounds in St. Marys<\/em><\/p>\n<p>St. Marys, Ont. \u2013 While George Bell was belting 47 home runs en route to the American League MVP award for the Toronto Blue Jays in 1987, fellow left fielder Tim Raines was scoring a National League-leading 123 runs and serving as the catalyst of the Montreal Expos\u2019 offence.<\/p>\n<p>In the mid-to-late \u201980s, many baseball pundits would\u2019ve agreed that Canada\u2019s major league teams boasted the top two offensive left fielders in the game. So it seems fitting that more than 20 years later, Bell and Raines will be inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame together.<\/p>\n<p>Toronto-born outfielder Rob Ducey, who made his big league debut in 1987 and eventually played left field for the Blue Jays and Expos, will also be enshrined, along with Blue Jays broadcasting legend Tom Cheek and Vancouver baseball icon Nat Bailey, who will both be honoured posthumously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis year\u2019s inductees represent a cross section of individuals who have both left their mark on baseball in Canada and enriched the game for all Canadians,\u201d said Allan Simpson, chair of the Hall\u2019s Selection Committee. \u201cWe will be honouring two of the most celebrated players in the history of the Blue Jays and Expos, the most influential voice in Canadian baseball history, a pioneer in the development of baseball at all levels in British Columbia and a Canadian who had a lengthy big league career and helped Canada become a respected international opponent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scott Crawford, the Hall\u2019s director of operations, also expressed his enthusiasm for this year\u2019s class.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m excited that we have such a diverse group of inductees,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen I was growing up, I remember being inspired by watching George Bell, Tim Raines and Rob Ducey on the field and being captivated by the way Tom Cheek called a baseball game on the radio. Nat Bailey\u2019s contributions to baseball came before I was born, but I\u2019ve learned a lot about the tremendously positive impact he has had on baseball in British Columbia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The induction ceremony will be part of a festival of events that will also include a celebrity slo-pitch game, a golf tournament and a Toronto Blue Jays baseball clinic for kids.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>George Bell<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-10636\" title=\"George Bell\" src=\"https:\/\/baseballhalloffame.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/George-Bell-195x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"195\" height=\"300\" \/>N\u00e9 en 1959 en R\u00e9publique dominicaine, Bell demeure le seul joueur des Blue Jays de Toronto \u00e0 avoir gagn\u00e9 le titre de meilleur joueur le plus utile \u00e0 son \u00e9quipe. Sa saison monstre en 1987, o\u00f9 il a frapp\u00e9 un record d\u2019\u00e9quipe de 47 circuits, produit le plus de points (134) dans la Ligue, obtenu 369 buts au total et 83 coups s\u00fbrs de plus d\u2019un but, est l\u2019une des meilleures de l\u2019histoire de la concession.<\/p>\n<p>Les Blues Jays ont mis sous contrat Bell car les Phillies ne l\u2019avaient pas prot\u00e9g\u00e9 apr\u00e8s le rep\u00eachage de 1980 (r\u00e8gle 5). Il est devenu un atout offensif de premier plan \u00e0 Toronto au cours de ses neuf saisons avec la formation. Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 invit\u00e9 \u00e0 trois matchs des \u00e9toiles et a gagn\u00e9 trois b\u00e2tons d\u2019argent. Il a frapp\u00e9 plus de 20 circuits au cours de six campagnes et a produit plus de 85 points sept fois avec les Jays. Choix de cinqui\u00e8me ronde des Expos de Montr\u00e9al en 1977, Raines a excell\u00e9 au cours de ses 13 saisons au Canada. On le retrouve en deuxi\u00e8me place chez les Expos pour la moyenne au b\u00e2ton (,301) et les coups s\u00fbrs (1622).<\/p>\n<p>In December 1990, Raines was dealt to the Chicago White Sox, where he toiled for five seasons, before being traded to the New York Yankees, where he earned two World Series rings (1996, 1998). In 2001, he returned to the Expos and hit .308 in 47 contests. In all, in a 23-year big league career \u2013 that also included stints with the Oakland A\u2019s, Baltimore Orioles and Florida Marlins \u2013 Raines collected 2,605 hits and 808 stolen bases (fifth all-time). Following his playing career, he coached and managed in the Expos organization and his No. 30 was retired by the club in 2004. Raines has also served as a first base coach with the White Sox and recently accepted a position to be a minor league baserunning and outfield instructor with the Blue Jays.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is wonderful news,&#8221; said Raines, upon being informed of his induction. &#8220;I&#8217;ll always cherish my time with the Montreal Expos and I look forward to seeing many of the team&#8217;s fans again at the induction ceremony in June.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Rob Ducey<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-10718\" title=\"Rob Ducey\" src=\"https:\/\/baseballhalloffame.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Rob-Ducey-2-251x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"251\" height=\"300\" \/>N\u00e9 \u00e0 Toronto en Ontario en 1965, Ducey a grandi \u00e0 Cambridge (Ontario). Le frappeur gaucher a sign\u00e9 comme agent libre avec les Blue Jays de Toronto en 1984. Apr\u00e8s avoir \u00e9t\u00e9 nomm\u00e9 le joueur le plus utile \u00e0 son \u00e9quipe dans la Ligue des recrues \u00e0 Medicine Hat, il a gravi les \u00e9chelons de l\u2019organisation et a fait ses d\u00e9buts dans les Majeures le 1er mai 1987. Il a aussi jou\u00e9 pour les Rangers du Texas, les Mariners de Seattle et les Phillies de Philadelphie avant d\u2019aller passer deux saisons au Japon o\u00f9 il a cogn\u00e9 51 circuits. Il est revenu \u00e0 Toronto pour cinq parties en 2000 et a disput\u00e9 son dernier match dans les Majeures avec les Expos en 2001. Il est devenu le second Canadien, apr\u00e8s Denis Boucher, \u00e0 avoir termin\u00e9 sa carri\u00e8re \u00e0 Montr\u00e9al apr\u00e8s l\u2019avoir d\u00e9but\u00e9 \u00e0 Toronto. Ducey est \u00e9galement l\u2019un des quatre Canadiens (Boucher, Shawn Hill et Matt Stairs) \u00e0 avoir port\u00e9 les deux uniformes. Au total, Ducey a jou\u00e9 19 saisons dans le baseball professionnel, l\u2019un des 12 Canadiens \u00e0 avoir r\u00e9ussi.<\/p>\n<p>Following his professional career, Ducey competed for Canada at the 2004 Olympics and served as a coach at the 2006 World Baseball Classic and 2008 Olympics. He has also been a scout for the Blue Jays and is currently working in player development for a Mexican League team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was very excited and honoured to hear about my induction. I\u2019m also very thankful and appreciative for being thought of in this light,\u201d said Ducey. \u201cI want to be \u2013 and have been \u2013 creative in my approach to this game. Along my travels, I have met many good people and developed tremendous friendships. Il \u00e9tait \u00e9galement derri\u00e8re le micro pour les 41 parties des s\u00e9ries de fin de saison de l\u2019organisation, dont le fameux sixi\u00e8me match de la S\u00e9rie mondiale de 1993 qui lui a inspir\u00e9 l\u2019une de ses plus c\u00e9l\u00e8bres phrases. Sur le coup de circuit gagnant de Joe Carter en fin de neuvi\u00e8me manche, Cheek a dit \u00ab Touch\u2019em all, Joe. Tu ne frapperas pas un autre circuit aussi important de ta vie. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Avant d\u2019arriver sur la galerie de presse des Blue Jays, Cheek, qui est n\u00e9 \u00e0 Pensacola en Floride en 1939, \u00e9tait le descripteur rempla\u00e7ant des Expos de Montr\u00e9al de 1974 \u00e0 1976. Son ton riche lui a donn\u00e9 la r\u00e9putation du meilleur descripteur en poste et, \u00e0 ce titre, a re\u00e7u le prix Jack Graney du Temple de la renomm\u00e9e du baseball canadien en 2001. En juin 2004, Cheek a manqu\u00e9 son premier match des Jays pour assister aux fun\u00e9railles de son p\u00e8re. L\u2019ann\u00e9e suivante, le Panth\u00e9on des sports canadiens a cr\u00e9\u00e9 le prix annuel Leadership m\u00e9dia Tom Cheek en son honneur et en a \u00e9t\u00e9 le premier r\u00e9cipiendaire. Pendant plus d\u2019un an, Cheek a combattu un virulent cancer du cerveau avant de s\u2019\u00e9teindre le 9 octobre 2005. Un peu plus tard en 2013, Cheek recevra le prix Ford C. Frick du Temple de la renomm\u00e9e \u00e0 Cooperstown, remis annuellement \u00e0 un descripteur qui a grandement contribu\u00e9 au baseball.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy first thought was, \u2018Wow, am I hearing Scott (Crawford, Hall director of operations) right?\u201d recounted Cheek\u2019s wife, Shirley, when asked about how she felt when she was informed of her husband\u2019s upcoming induction. \u201cTom would be so proud to know that he is being honored by the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and I\u2019ll do my best to represent him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><strong>Nat Bailey<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-10633\" title=\"Nat Bailey\" src=\"https:\/\/baseballhalloffame.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Nat-Bailey-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"286\" srcset=\"https:\/\/baseballhalloffame.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Nat-Bailey-2.jpg 200w, https:\/\/baseballhalloffame.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/Nat-Bailey-2-8x12.jpg 8w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>N\u00e9 \u00e0 St-Paul au Minnesota en 1902, Bailey a d\u00e9m\u00e9nag\u00e9 \u00e0 Vancouver alors qu\u2019il \u00e9tait enfant. Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 engag\u00e9 par Robert Brown (intronis\u00e9 au Temple de la renomm\u00e9e du baseball canadien) pour travailler au parc Athletic de Vancouver comme homme \u00e0 tout faire : de vendeur de hot-dog \u00e0 annonceur. Il a ouvert le premier restaurant avec commande \u00e0 l\u2019auto en 1928, le White Spot. Devant autant de popularit\u00e9, il a lanc\u00e9 une cha\u00eene de restaurants partout en province. Une partie des profits engendr\u00e9s par ses restaurants ont financ\u00e9 plusieurs \u00e9quipes des Petites ligues.<\/p>\n<p>In the mid-\u201950s, Bailey purchased the Triple-A Vancouver Mounties and his commitment to the club over the next decade helped raise interest in professional baseball to new heights in the city. After Bailey passed away in 1978, Capilano Stadium, where the Mounties played, was renamed Nat Bailey Stadium in his honour. For the past two seasons, the Vancouver Canadians, the Toronto Blue Jays\u2019 Class-A Short-Season club, have played in this stadium and have won the Northwest League championship in each campaign. For his contributions to sports in B.C., Bailey was inducted into the B.C.
