\"logo\"<\/a>St. Marys, Ont. \u2013 Two men that helped make the Montreal Expos one of baseball\u2019s most competitive franchises of the 1980s will be inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame on June 21 in St. Marys, Ont.<\/p>\n

Long-time Expos third baseman Tim Wallach and former general manager Murray Cook will be honoured, along with legendary Expos broadcaster Dave Van Horne. Onetime Canadian national team coach and highly respected scout Jim Ridley will also be inducted posthumously.<\/p>\n

\u201cTim Wallach and Dave Van Horne are two names that have become synonymous with the Montreal Expos, and both have had a significant impact on baseball in this country, and Murray Cook and Jim Ridley helped blaze a trail for Canadians in the professional scouting and executive ranks,\u201d said Scott Crawford, the hall\u2019s director of operations. \u201cWe\u2019re proud and excited to celebrate their careers in St. Marys this June.\u201d<\/p>\n

The induction ceremony will be part of a festival of events that will also include a celebrity slo-pitch game and home run derby, a London Salutes Canadian Baseball breakfast, the Hall\u2019s 18th<\/sup> annual celebrity golf tournament and a Toronto Blue Jays Honda Super Camp for kids.<\/p>\n

Tim Wallach<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\"Tim<\/a>N\u00e9 en 1957 \u00e0 Huntington Beach en Californie, Tim Wallach est le meneur chez les Expos de Montr\u00e9al dans plusieurs cat\u00e9gories dont les matchs jou\u00e9s (1767), les coups s\u00fbrs (1694), les doubles (360), les points produits (905) et le nombre de but total (2728). Chosen 10th<\/sup> overall by the Expos in the 1979 amateur draft, Wallach began his big league career as an outfielder before evolving into the best third baseman in the franchise\u2019s history. In 13 seasons with the Expos from 1980 to 1992, Wallach was selected to five all-star games (1984, 1985, 1987, 1989, 1990), won three Gold Gloves (1985, 1988, 1990) and captured two Silver Slugger Awards (1985, 1987). He was also named to the Topps All-Star Rookie team in 1981, topped the National League in doubles in 1987 and 1989 and finished fourth in National League MVP voting in 1987.<\/p>\n

What a great thrill to be going in with such integral parts of the Montreal Expos for such a long time, and to join many of my old teammates and manager, along with so many people that meant so much to Canadian baseball. This is a great honour for my family and myself,\u201d said Wallach.<\/p>\n

Dave Van Horne<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\"DaveVanHorne--headshot\"<\/a>Il a termin\u00e9 sa carri\u00e8re comme descripteur des matchs des Marlins de Miami, mais pour des centaines de milliers de Canadiens, Dave Van Horne sera toujours la voix des Expos de Montr\u00e9al. Natif de la Pennsylvanie, il d\u00e9crivait les parties des Braves de Richmond (formation de niveau AAA des Braves d\u2019Atlanta) \u00e0 la radio lorsqu\u2019il a rencontr\u00e9 John McHale (alors pr\u00e9sident des Braves). Lorsque ce dernier est devenu pr\u00e9sident des Expos, il a offert le poste de descripteur des matchs des Expos \u00e0 la radio d\u00e8s 1969.<\/p>\n

Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 derri\u00e8re le micro pour le premier match de l\u2019histoire des Expos le 8 avril 1969 et jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la fin de la campagne 2000. Il est reconnu pour son timbre de voix doux et grave et a fait sa marque avec sa phrase \u00ab Up, Up and away! \u00bb lors de chaque circuit des Expos. En 32 saisons avec l\u2019organisation montr\u00e9alaise, il a entre autres d\u00e9crit les enlevantes courses au championnat de 1979 et 1980, la seule pr\u00e9sence de l\u2019\u00e9quipe en s\u00e9ries en 1981 et le match parfait de Dennis Martinez le 28 juillet 1991 \u2013 d\u2019o\u00f9 il a prononc\u00e9 le c\u00e9l\u00e8bre \u00ab El Presidente, El Perfeto! \u00bb.<\/p>\n

En 2001, Van Horne a accept\u00e9 le poste de descripteur des joutes des Marlins et a d\u00e9crit le championnat de la S\u00e9rie mondiale en 2003. Comme le hasard fait souvent bien les choses, Van Horne et les Marlins \u00e9taient les visiteurs lors du tout dernier match des Expos au Stade olympique le 29 septembre 2004.<\/p>\n

In 1996, Van Horne received the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame\u2019s Jack Graney Award for broadcasting excellence and 15 years later, he was the recipient of the National Baseball Hall of Fame\u2019s equivalent honour, the Ford C. Frick Award. Now entering his 46th<\/sup> year of broadcasting major league games, Van Horne is set to become the second Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame inductee (Tom Cheek is the other) to have won both the Jack Graney and Ford C. Frick Awards.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a great honor.\u00a0 I had spent over half my adult life as the Expos radio and TV announcer and it\u2019s very gratifying to know those years were appreciated and remembered,” said Van Horne. “I was blessed to have wonderful partners, including Duke Snider and Ken Singleton and of course, my first Montreal partner, Russ Taylor. It is exciting and humbling to join the illustrious membership of Canadian Hall of Famers such as, my fellow Expos family members, Charles Bronfman, John McHale, Jim Fanning, Rusty Staub, Claude Raymond, Ron Piche, Steve Rogers, Gary Carter, Andre Dawson, Tim Raines, Larry Walker and Rheal Cormier. I\u2019m especially proud to join Tom Cheek, giving this Hall, two broadcasters, included on the roster of players, executives and baseball dignitaries who have contributed to this great game, in this great country.\u201d<\/p>\n

Murray Cook<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\"COOK_MURRAY\"<\/a>N\u00e9 \u00e0 Sackville au Nouveau-Brunswick en 1940, Murray Cook a pass\u00e9 plus de cinquante ann\u00e9es dans le baseball professionnel. Apr\u00e8s avoir obtenu un dipl\u00f4me en histoire en 1962 de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 Ohio, les Pirates de Pittsburgh l\u2019ont mis sous contrat. Joueur de troisi\u00e8me but et d\u2019arr\u00eat-court, il a pass\u00e9 quatre saisons dans les niveaux inf\u00e9rieurs de l\u2019organisation avant d\u2019accrocher ses crampons et de devenir le directeur-g\u00e9rant de la formation de Niveau-A \u00e0 Gastonia en 1966.<\/p>\n

Cook a suffisamment impressionn\u00e9 les Pirates, qui l\u2019ont promu dans les bureaux du grand club en 1967 o\u00f9 il a \u00e9t\u00e9 nomm\u00e9 l\u2019assistant au directeur des \u00e9quipes mineures. Il a gravi les \u00e9chelons jusqu\u2019au poste d\u2019assistant au directeur des op\u00e9rations des \u00e9quipes mineures en 1972 et directeur du recrutement en 1977.<\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s 21 ans avec l\u2019organisation des Pirates, Cook a \u00e9t\u00e9 engag\u00e9 comme directeur du recrutement par les Yankees de New York en janvier 1983. Six mois plus tard, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 nomm\u00e9 leur directeur-g\u00e9rant, devenant seulement le deuxi\u00e8me canadien \u00e0 occuper ce poste dans les Majeures. Le premier a \u00e9t\u00e9 George Selkrik (Huntsville, ON) avec les Senators de Washington de 1964 \u00e0 1969. Trois autres canadiens ont suivi leurs traces par la suite : Gord Ash (Blue Jays de Toronto, 1995 \u00e0 2001), Doug Melvin (Rangers du Texas de 1994 \u00e0 2001, Brewers de Milwaukee de 2003 \u00e0 aujourd\u2019hui) et Alex Anthopoulos (Blue Jays de Toronto, de 2009 \u00e0 aujourd\u2019hui).<\/p>\n

En 1984, les Yankees ont fait un peu de m\u00e9nage et Cook s\u2019est retrouv\u00e9 vice-pr\u00e9sident et directeur du recrutement. Au d\u00e9but du mois de septembre de la m\u00eame ann\u00e9e, il a remplac\u00e9 John McHale comme directeur-g\u00e9rant des Expos de Montr\u00e9al. En pr\u00e8s de trois ans avec l\u2019\u00e9quipe, on se souviendra du rep\u00eachage de Randy Johnson, la signature de Dennis Martinez et de son travail de reconstruction qui a fait des Expos une \u00e9quipe impliqu\u00e9e dans plusieurs courses au championnat.<\/p>\n

Il a par la suite occup\u00e9 le poste de directeur-g\u00e9rant avec les Reds de Cincinnati et de d\u00e9pisteur pour les Twins du Minnesota, les Marlins de Miami, les Red Sox de Boston et les Tigers de D\u00e9troit. En 2010, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 nomm\u00e9 le d\u00e9pisteur de la C\u00f4te est de l\u2019ann\u00e9e. Il est pr\u00e9sentement \u00e0 l\u2019emploi des Tigers.<\/p>\n

“I’m stunned, honoured and humbled to receive such recognition from my homeland.” said Cook, when told the news of his upcoming Induction.<\/p>\n

Jim Ridley<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

\"Jim<\/a>Apr\u00e8s deux saisons comme voltigeur dans l\u2019organisation des Braves de Milwaukee en 1964 et 1965, Jim Ridley est revenu au Canada, lui qui est n\u00e9 \u00e0 Toronto, o\u00f9 il aura un impact significatif sur le baseball dans son pays au cours des quatre d\u00e9cennies suivantes.<\/p>\n

While continuing his playing career in the Intercounty Baseball League \u2013 where he was named league MVP with Stratford Hillers in 1974 \u2013 Ridley launched his storied coaching and scouting career. He began as a part-time scout with the Detroit Tigers in 1973, before joining the Toronto Blue Jays in 1976 to run the club\u2019s first tryout camp in Utica, N.Y. \u00a0In his 26 years as a scout with the Blue Jays, Ridley was the driving force behind the club\u2019s decisions to sign Canadians like Paul Spoljaric, Rob Butler and David Corrente. He also served as a coach with the Blue Jays\u2019 rookie-level affiliate in Medicine Hat from 1978 to 1980.<\/p>\n

Au niveau national, Ridley a dirig\u00e9 l\u2019\u00e9quipe nationale junior pendant six campagnes, gagnant des m\u00e9dailles de bronze aux Coupes du monde de 1983 et 1987. Il \u00e9tait \u00e0 la t\u00eate de l\u2019\u00e9quipe olympique en 1988 et aux jeux Panam en 1991. En 2002, Ridley est devenu d\u00e9pisteur pour les Twins du Minnesota et a d\u00e9couvert Jon Waltenbury et Rene Tosoni.<\/p>\n

Ridley est d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9 des suites du cancer le 28 novembre 2008. \u00c0 sa m\u00e9moire, le Canadian Baseball Network d\u00e9cerne annuellement le prix Jim Ridley au meilleur d\u00e9pisteur du pays.<\/p>\n

“We are deeply honored that our father Jim Ridley has been elected into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame,” said Ridley’s children Jeremy, Shayne, and Shannon in a joint statement. “Our father was a player, coach, manager, scout and teacher of the game of baseball. He devoted himself to helping young ball players achieve their dreams of becoming better at their sport. Although techniques have changed in the game over the years and perhaps Dad had some out of fashion ideas, he always taught that any and all athletes must play the game with honour, respect and with a positive view about themselves and others. This is how he taught us, as we now instill and teach in our own children and we are thrilled that he in turn is being honoured, respected and positively remembered for his many years of contribution to the sport of baseball in Canada.”<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
