Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame set to induct diverse 2016 class<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"logo2\"<\/a>St. Marys, Ont. \u2013 It\u2019s one of the most diverse inductee classes in the 33-year history of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n

Ex-Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Pat Hentgen<\/strong> and former Montreal Expos hurler Dennis Martinez<\/strong> will be inducted in a ceremony on Saturday, June 18 at 1 p.m. in St. Marys, Ont., along with trailblazing Canadian scout Wayne Norton<\/strong> (Winnipeg, Man.), long-time Blue Jays executive Howard Starkman<\/strong> (Toronto, Ont.) and early Blue Jays TV analyst Tony Kubek<\/strong>, who\u2019s unable to attend. Baseball pioneer William Shuttleworth<\/strong> (Brantford, Ont.) will also be enshrined posthumously.\u00a0The ceremony will be emceed by Sportsnet\u2019s Mike Wilner.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re proud to honour such a diverse class. Each of the new inductees has made a significant contribution to baseball in Canada in their own unique way,\u201d said Scott Crawford, the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame\u2019s director of operations. \u201cWe\u2019re looking forward to celebrating their careers in St. Marys on June 18th.\u201d<\/p>\n

The induction ceremony will be part of a festival of events that will also include a home run derby and celebrity slo-pitch game (June 16, starting at 6 p.m.), the Hall\u2019s 20th<\/sup> annual celebrity golf tournament and banquet (June 17) sponsored by TD Bank and a Downtown Family Baseball Street Festival (June 18, starting at 9 a.m.). 2016 Inductee Bios<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pat Hentgen<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Pat<\/a>N\u00e9 en 1968 \u00e0 D\u00e9troit au Michigan, Hentgen a \u00e9t\u00e9 associ\u00e9 aux Blue Jays de Toronto pendant 26 ans, soit comme joueur, entra\u00eeneur, ambassadeur ou assistant sp\u00e9cial. L\u2019intense lanceur droitier a \u00e9t\u00e9 rep\u00each\u00e9 par les Jays en cinqui\u00e8me ronde en 1986 et a fait ses d\u00e9buts avec la formation en 1992. Il avait alors pris part \u00e0 28 parties, principalement en rel\u00e8ve, lors de l\u2019ann\u00e9e de la premi\u00e8re conqu\u00eate de la S\u00e9rie mondiale.<\/p>\n

In the ensuing season, he was inserted into the rotation and blossomed into an all-star, registering 19 regular season victories and winning Game 3 of the World Series to help the Blue Jays capture their second consecutive championship. From there, the 6-foot-2 righty evolved into the club\u2019s ace. After being selected to his second all-star game in 1994, Hentgen won 20 games and topped the American League in innings pitched (265-2\/3), complete games (10) and shutouts (3) in 1996 to become the first Blue Jay to win the American League Cy Young Award. For an encore, he led the American League in games started (35), innings pitched (264), complete games (9) and shutouts (3) in 1997.<\/p>\n

Dennis Martinez<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"IMG_0015\"<\/a>N\u00e9 en 1954 \u00e0 Granada au Nicaragua, Martinez a obtenu 100 victoires (le deuxi\u00e8me plus haut total de l\u2019histoire des Expos) en huit saisons avec la formation montr\u00e9alaise, de 1986 \u00e0 1993. Le lanceur droitier se classe \u00e9galement deuxi\u00e8me chez les Expos pour le nombre de d\u00e9parts (233) et les manches lanc\u00e9es (1609) et troisi\u00e8me pour les retraits sur des prises (973), matchs complets (41) et jeux blancs (13). Surnomm\u00e9 El Presidente, Martinez a \u00e9t\u00e9 le premier joueur originaire du Nicaragua \u00e0 jouer dans les Majeures. Lorsqu\u2019il a lanc\u00e9 son match parfait, le 28 juillet 1991, le seul de l\u2019histoire des Expos, le descripteur des matchs des Expos et membre du Temple de la renomm\u00e9e depuis 2014 Dave Van Horne l\u2019avait renomm\u00e9 El Presidente, El Perfecto.<\/p>\n

Pendant son s\u00e9jour avec les Expos, Martinez a \u00e9t\u00e9 invit\u00e9 \u00e0 trois matchs des \u00e9toiles (1990, 1991 et 1992) et a domin\u00e9 la Ligue nationale en 1991 pour la moyenne de points m\u00e9rit\u00e9s (2,39), les matchs complets (9) et les jeux blancs (5). Au cours des huit saisons avec l\u2019\u00e9quipe, il a compil\u00e9 une MPM de 3,06 et gagn\u00e9 10 parties ou plus sept fois et 15 ou plus, quatre fois.<\/p>\n

Martinez a \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9chang\u00e9 aux Expos le 16 juin 1986, apr\u00e8s avoir r\u00e9colt\u00e9 108 victoires \u00e0 ses 11 premi\u00e8res saisons avec les Orioles de Baltimore. Lorsqu\u2019il a enregistr\u00e9 sa 100e victoire avec les Expos, il est devenu l\u2019un des dix artilleurs \u00e0 atteindre le plateau des 100 gains dans les deux Ligues. Wayne Norton<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Wayne<\/a>Born in 1942 in Winnipeg, Man., Norton played in 1,206 minor league games \u2013 including five seasons in Triple-A \u2013 primarily as a centre fielder, before becoming a trailblazing baseball executive and scout in Canada. In the mid-1970s, Norton founded and established Baseball Canada\u2019s Junior National Team and he became a long-time coach and manager for the organization, while doubling as a part-time scout for the Montreal Expos. He also managed Canada\u2019s Pan Am Games team in 1975, prior to helping to launch Baseball B.C. two years later. In the late 1970s, he was enlisted to create and write Baseball Canada\u2019s first coaching manuals and many of the guidelines from those are still employed today.<\/p>\n

En 1986, Norton a cr\u00e9\u00e9 la National Baseball Institue (NBI) \u00e0 Vancouver et a engag\u00e9 John Haar (intronis\u00e9 en 2007) comme premier entra\u00eeneur. Apr\u00e8s avoir quitt\u00e9 la NBI en 1994, Norton a poursuivi sa carri\u00e8re en tant d\u00e9pisteur. Pat Gillick, alors avec les Orioles de Baltimore, l\u2019a engag\u00e9 de 1996 \u00e0 1999 et l\u2019a amen\u00e9 avec lui en 2000 chez les Mariners de Seattle. Pour son excellent travail comme d\u00e9pisteur, Norton a \u00e9t\u00e9 nomm\u00e9 le recruteur international par excellence chez les Mariners en 2007 et le d\u00e9pisteur de l\u2019ann\u00e9e selon le Canadian Baseball Network en 1998 et 2013.<\/p>\n

\u00ab L\u2019appel m\u2019informant de mon intronisation m\u2019a rendu tr\u00e8s heureux. Ce sera certainement un honneur d\u2019\u00eatre intronis\u00e9 au Temple de la renomm\u00e9e du baseball canadien. Je suis reconnaissant envers mes amis qui ont vot\u00e9 pour moi, pour mes coll\u00e8gues et ma famille qui ont soutenu ma nomination. Ce geste de leur part veut dire beaucoup pour moi. C\u2019est gratifiant de voir mes apports au baseball canadien \u00eatre reconnues par mes semblables et accept\u00e9es par le comit\u00e9 de s\u00e9lection. J\u2019ai bien h\u00e2te d\u2019\u00eatre des v\u00f4tres, je pr\u00e9vois de belles journ\u00e9es \u00e0 St Marys. \u00bb<\/p>\n

Howard Starkman<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Howie<\/a>N\u00e9 en 1945 \u00e0 Toronto en Ontario, Starkman est \u00e0 l\u2019emploi des Blue Jays de Toronto depuis quatre d\u00e9cennies. Il avait d\u2019abord \u00e9t\u00e9 engag\u00e9 comme directeur des communications le 4 juillet 1976, poste qu\u2019il conservera jusqu\u2019en 1998. Dans ce r\u00f4le, il \u00e9tait responsable des relations avec les m\u00e9dias, les diffuseurs, les voyages de l\u2019\u00e9quipe et les relations publiques. Il a aussi g\u00e9r\u00e9 le concours \u00ab Nomme l\u2019\u00e9quipe \u00bb qui invitait la population \u00e0 proposer des noms pour l\u2019\u00e9quipe avant sa saison inaugurale.<\/p>\n

Starkman a \u00e9galement contribu\u00e9 de fa\u00e7on importante au premier match des Jays au Stade de l\u2019exposition, au premier match disput\u00e9 au SkyDome et au cours des \u00e9liminatoires et des S\u00e9ries mondiales. Il a de plus agi comme membre des relations publiques pour les Ligues majeures pour 15 S\u00e9ries mondiales et 10 matchs des \u00e9toiles. Pour son excellent travail dans le d\u00e9partement des communications, il a re\u00e7u le prix Robert O. Fishel du Temple de la renomm\u00e9e \u00e0 Cooperstown en 1995. Six ans plus tard, les Ligues majeures ont c\u00e9l\u00e9br\u00e9 ses 25 ans de service.<\/p>\n

En 1999, Starkman a \u00e9t\u00e9 nomm\u00e9 le vice-pr\u00e9sident aux communications des Jays, avant de devenir le vice-pr\u00e9sident des projets sp\u00e9ciaux de 2002 \u00e0 2014. Largement respect\u00e9 de ses coll\u00e8gues et des m\u00e9dias, Starkman a deux fois \u00e9t\u00e9 honor\u00e9 du prix Good Guy du chapitre torontois des journalistes couvrant le baseball (1980 et 1996). En 2012, il a re\u00e7u le prix du Pr\u00e9sident de l\u2019organisme canadien Sports m\u00e9dia.<\/p>\n

Les Blue Jays ont cr\u00e9\u00e9 le prix Howard Starkman en 2014 et l\u2019ont aussit\u00f4t nomm\u00e9 le premier r\u00e9cipiendaire. Annuellement, cet honneur sera attribu\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019employ\u00e9 des Jays qui aura le plus exprim\u00e9 les valeurs d\u2019int\u00e9gration, l\u2019innovation, la responsabilit\u00e9, le travail d\u2019\u00e9quipe et sa passion pour la victoire.<\/p>\n

Aujourd\u2019hui, il est consultant pour les Blue Jays.\n\n\u00ab Je suis vraiment honor\u00e9 de cette s\u00e9lection au Temple de la renomm\u00e9e du baseball canadien. Je suis avec les Jays depuis 40 ans et c\u2019est au-del\u00e0 de mes esp\u00e9rances, tr\u00e8s gratifiant de voir mon apport \u00eatre ainsi reconnu. Je suis reconnaissant et fier de rejoindre des joueurs, des dirigeants et des dignitaires si importants pour ce sport au Canada. \u00bb<\/p>\n

Tony Kubek (Unable to attend)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"Tony<\/a>N\u00e9 \u00e0 Milwaukee au Wisconsin en 1935, Kubek a gagn\u00e9 trois S\u00e9ries mondiales comme arr\u00eat-court avec les Yankees de New York de 1957 \u00e0 1965 avant de devenir un analyste vedette pour le r\u00e9seau NBC. Il a pass\u00e9 25 ans derri\u00e8re le micro, couvrant 11 S\u00e9ries mondiales, 10 matchs des \u00e9toiles et les populaires \u00ab matchs de la semaine \u00bb du samedi apr\u00e8s-midi. Il a eu comme coll\u00e8gue les l\u00e9gendaires Jim Simpson, Curt Gowdy et Bob Costas.<\/p>\n

Les Blue Jays de Toronto ont eu la chance d\u2019avoir Kubek comme analyste \u00e0 la t\u00e9l\u00e9vision d\u00e8s 1977 et pendant 13 saisons. Il a expliqu\u00e9 les subtilit\u00e9s du baseball \u00e0 des dizaines de milliers de t\u00e9l\u00e9spectateurs sur les r\u00e9seaux CTV et TSN. En plus de fournir des informations int\u00e9ressantes en tant qu\u2019ancien joueur, ses analyses rapides et compl\u00e8tes ont fait de lui l\u2019un des meilleurs et des plus respect\u00e9s de son \u00e9poque. Alors avec les Jays, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 le premier \u00e0 communiquer avec le r\u00e9alisateur au cours du match pour proposer des angles de cam\u00e9ra afin d\u2019am\u00e9liorer les reportages.<\/p>\n

Kubek est devenu le premier analyste travaillant exclusivement \u00e0 la t\u00e9l\u00e9vision \u00e0 recevoir le prix Ford C. Frick du Temple de la renomm\u00e9e de Cooperstown en 2009. Du coup, il devenait le premier r\u00e9cipiendaire du prix \u00e0 avoir travaill\u00e9 pour une \u00e9quipe canadienne. Depuis, Tom Cheek (intronis\u00e9 en 2013) et Dave Van Horne (intronis\u00e9 en 2014) ont aussi re\u00e7u cet honneur.<\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s son s\u00e9jour avec les Jays, il est retourn\u00e9 \u00e0 New York pour couvrir les matchs des Yankees pour le r\u00e9seau MSG pendant cinq ans, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 sa retraite en 1994.<\/p>\n

\u201cOverwhelmed, in a positive sense,\u201d said Kubek when asked about how he felt about his induction into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame. \u201cUnexpected, because I was doing exactly what I\u2019ve loved doing for much of my life, playing, watching and talking\u00a0baseball. I had flashbacks of watching a young team being transformed into a winner. I\u2019m grateful for being accepted by Canadian baseball fans, and for this wonderful honor. When I was asked to consider the job with the Blue Jays, I talked to Elston Howard, a teammate and great Yankee, who starred with the Triple-A, International League Toronto Maple Leafs. He said, \u2018You gotta take it, they\u2019re the best fans, a friendly city; they know their baseball.\u2019 Ellie was right.\u201d<\/p>\n

William Shuttleworth<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"William<\/a>N\u00e9 \u00e0 Brantford en Ontario en 1843, Shuttleworth est souvent appel\u00e9 le \u00ab p\u00e8re du baseball canadien \u00bb. Son apport au baseball au Canada a \u00e9t\u00e9 mis en lumi\u00e8re r\u00e9cemment par l\u2019historien canadien Bill Humber (intronis\u00e9 en 2018).<\/p>\n

Lorsque Shuttleworth r\u00e9sidait \u00e0 Hamilton en 1854, il a mis sur pied la premi\u00e8re \u00e9quipe de baseball officielle, alors appel\u00e9e les Young Canadiens de Hamilton. \u00c0 partir de ce moment, et jusqu\u2019au milieu des ann\u00e9es 1870, Shuttleworth \u00e9tait le leader derri\u00e8re le baseball au Canada et est devenu le vice-pr\u00e9sident de la premi\u00e8re organisation de baseball au pays en 1864.<\/p>\n

En tant que fondateur des Young Canadians, il les a fait passer des r\u00e8glements du baseball canadien (11 joueurs dans chaque \u00e9quipe, match de deux manches) aux r\u00e8gles de New York (essentiellement les r\u00e8gles que nous connaissons aujourd\u2019hui) vers 1860. Mais Shuttleworth n\u2019\u00e9tait pas seulement un organisateur, il \u00e9tait aussi un receveur et le premier frappeur de son \u00e9quipe et a particip\u00e9 au deuxi\u00e8me match international de l\u2019histoire, quelques semaines apr\u00e8s le premier et qui mettait en vedette une autre \u00e9quipe de Hamilton. Alors qu\u2019il \u00e9tait toujours un joueur actif, il \u00e9tait en m\u00eame temps le pr\u00e9sident des Young Canadians (qui sont devenus les Maple Leafs en 1862) de 1860 \u00e0 1871.<\/p>\n

Shuttleworth \u00e9tait aussi membre de l\u2019\u00e9quipe de l\u2019Ontario (des joueurs venant de Hamilton et Guelph) qui a termin\u00e9 troisi\u00e8me au cours d\u2019un important tournoi tenu \u00e0 D\u00e9troit en 1967. Shuttleworth a \u00e9galement offici\u00e9 d\u2019importants matchs dans les ann\u00e9es 1860, dont une partie de championnat entre Guelph et Woodstock en 1868.<\/p>\n

Shuttleworth a ensuite d\u00e9m\u00e9nag\u00e9 \u00e0 Geneva (New York) en 1893 avec son fils. Il est d\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9 le 31 mars 1903 et est enterr\u00e9 \u00e0 Hamilton (ON). Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 intronis\u00e9 au Panth\u00e9on canadien des sports en 2015.<\/p>\n

The registration fee includes 18 holes of golf, a continental breakfast, lunch, a supper banquet, hole sponsorship, a gift bag and the opportunity to golf with a celebrity. Individuals (who pay $300) will enjoy all the same perks, with the exception of the hole sponsorship.<\/p>\n

Celebrities will include 2016 inductees Pat Hentgen, Dennis Martinez, Howard Starkman and Wayne Norton, as well as past inductees Fergie Jenkins (1987), Pat Gillick (1997), Paul Beeston (2002), Don McDougall (2002), Jim McKean (2004), Steve Rogers (2005), John Haar (2007), Doug Melvin (2012) and Murray Cook (2014). Ex-big leaguers Duane Ward, Billy Atkinson, Larry Landreth, John Upham, Paul Spoljaric, Greg O’Halloran and Darrin Fletcher will also being teeing it up, along with onetime Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mark Bell. Celebrities will be signing autographs at approximately 3:30 p.m. The cost is $10 for Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame members and $15 for non-members per trip through the autograph line.<\/p>\n

Please note that autographs are limited to one item per person per inductee\/special guest. Autographs will be signed on a first come first serve basis. Hall of Fame staff reserves the right to cut the autograph line at any time. Autographs are not guaranteed. No posed photos. Autograph session will last 90 minutes<\/em><\/p>\n
