James Paxton to be presented with Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame\u2019s Tip O\u2019Neill Award<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

St. Marys,\nOnt. \u2013 Ladner, B.C. native James Paxton will be presented with the Canadian\nBaseball Hall of Fame\u2019s 2018 Tip O\u2019Neill Award in a ceremony prior to the New\nYork Yankees game against the Baltimore Orioles on May 14<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paxton is\na first-time winner of this award that the Hall presents annually to the\nCanadian player judged to have excelled in individual achievement and team\ncontribution while adhering to baseball\u2019s highest ideals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To\ndetermine the winner, the Hall takes into account a number of criteria,\nincluding each candidate\u2019s on-the-field performance, contributions to their\nteam, community and charitable endeavors and support in fan voting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paxton, who\nwas traded by the Seattle Mariners to the Yankees on November 19, staved off strong\ncompetition from Cincinnati Reds slugger and seven-time winner Joey Votto\n(Etobicoke, Ont.), current Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Vladimir Guerrero\nJr. (Montreal, Que.) and St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Tyler O\u2019Neill (Maple\nRidge, B.C.) to secure the honour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJames\nPaxton had an outstanding season in 2018,\u201d said Scott Crawford, the Canadian\nBaseball Hall of Fame\u2019s director of operations. \u201cNot only did he make history\nwhen he became the first Canadian to throw a major league no-hitter on Canadian\nsoil, but he also struck out batters at a near-record rate over the course of\nthe season. He\u2019s definitely a worthy recipient of the award.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nicknamed \u201cBig Maple\u201d by Mariners\nfans, the 6-foot-4 southpaw became the first Canadian pitcher to throw a major\nleague no-hitter on Canadian soil when he held the Blue Jays hitless on May 8\nat Rogers Centre. That performance came just six days after he had set a\nCanadian record by striking out 16 batters on May 2 in a start against the\nOakland A\u2019s. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In all, the 30-year-old Paxton had\neight starts in which he struck out at least 10 batters and went 11-6 with a\n3.76 ERA and fanned 208 batters in 160 1\/3 innings. His 208 strikeouts are the\nsecond-most by a Canadian left-hander in a major league season and he became\none of only two pitchers in big league history to notch 200 strikeouts in a\nseason in 161 or fewer innings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among American League pitchers\nwith at least 160 innings pitched in 2018, Paxton finished third in strikeouts\nper nine innings (11.68), fourth in strikeout-to-walk ratio (4.95), seventh in\nWHIP (1.10) and ninth in opponents\u2019 batting average against (.224).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paxton is also off to an excellent\nstart with the Yankees this season. Through seven starts, he is 3-2 with a 3.11\nERA and has fanned 52 batters in 37 2\/3 innings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On\ntop of his strong on-the-field performance, Paxton has also been active in\ncharitable and community endeavors in the greater Vancouver area. He has\ndonated signed memorabilia and game tickets to various charities and has\nvolunteered to provide pitching lessons to youth in the region. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\nam extremely honoured to have been named the Tip O\u2019Neill Award winner for 2018.\nI am proud to be representing Canada in Major League Baseball and try to do so\nto the best of my ability,\u201d said Paxton. \u201cI will continue to give everything I\nhave to be the best baseball player and person I can be. Thank you so much to\nthe Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame for recognizing my efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Hall\u2019s Tip O\u2019Neill Award is named after\nWoodstock, Ont., native James \u201cTip\u201d O\u2019Neill, who was one of Major League Baseball\u2019s\nfirst legitimate stars. With the American Association\u2019s St. Louis Browns in\n1887, O\u2019Neill set big league records in hits, doubles, slugging percentage and\ntotal bases, while compiling a major league record .492 batting average. Walks\nwere counted as hits in 1887, but if O\u2019Neill\u2019s average was calculated by\ntoday\u2019s standards, it would be .435, the second-highest in big league history\nto Hugh Duffy who hit .440 in 1894.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

St-Marys, Ontario \u2013 James Paxton, originaire de Ladner en Colombie-Britannique, recevra le prix Tip O\u2019Neill 2018 du Temple de la renomm\u00e9e du baseball canadien lors d\u2019une c\u00e9r\u00e9monie qui aura lieu avant la rencontre entre les Yankees de New York et les Orioles de Baltimore le 14 mai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paxton a m\u00e9rit\u00e9 ce troph\u00e9e pour la premi\u00e8re\nde sa carri\u00e8re l\u2019automne dernier, un prix qui est remis annuellement par le Temple\nau joueur canadien qui a excell\u00e9 de fa\u00e7on individuelle et apport\u00e9 une grande\ncontribution \u00e0 son club tout en adh\u00e9rant aux plus grands id\u00e9aux du baseball.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pour d\u00e9terminer un gagnant, le Temple prend\nen consid\u00e9ration de nombreux crit\u00e8res, incluant les r\u00e9sultats de chaque\ncandidat sur le terrain, son importance au sein de l\u2019\u00e9quipe, son engagement\ncommunautaire et le nombre de votes re\u00e7u par les amateurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paxton, qui a \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9chang\u00e9 des Mariners de\nSeattle aux Yankees de New York le 19 novembre dernier, a devanc\u00e9 le joueur des\nReds de Cincinnati et gagnant \u00e0 sept reprises Joey Votto (Etobicoke, ON), le\nfutur joueur \u00e9toile des Blue Jays de Toronto Vladimir Guerror Jr (Montr\u00e9al, QC)\net le voltigeur des Cardinals de Saint-Louis Tyler O\u2019Neill (Maple Ridge,\nC.-B.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab James Paxton a connu une saison 2018\nextraordinaire, a dit Scott Crawford, le directeur des op\u00e9rations du Temple de\nla renomm\u00e9e et mus\u00e9e du baseball canadien. En plus de r\u00e9ussir le premier match\nsans point ni coup s\u00fbr d\u2019un canadien dans son propre pays dans le baseball\nmajeur, il a pratiquement \u00e9gal\u00e9 un record de retraits sur des prises en une\nsaison. Il m\u00e9rite d\u00e9finitivement cet honneur. \u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Surnomm\u00e9 \u00ab Big Maple \u00bb par les partisans\ndes Mariners, le lanceur gaucher de 6 pieds et 4 pouces est devenu le premier\nlanceur canadien \u00e0 lancer un match sans point ni coup s\u00fbr au Canada, le 8 mai\ndernier au Rogers Center. Six jours plus t\u00f4t, il avait \u00e9tabli un nouveau record\npour un lanceur canadien en retirant 16 frappeurs sur des prises contre les A\u2019s\nd\u2019Oakland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Au final, le lanceur de 30 ans a compil\u00e9\nhuit d\u00e9parts o\u00f9 il a fait au moins 10 victimes au b\u00e2ton et a termin\u00e9 la\ncampagne avec une fiche de 11-6 et une moyenne de points m\u00e9rit\u00e9s de 3,76. Il a\nretir\u00e9 un total de 208 frappeurs sur des prises, le deuxi\u00e8me plus haut total\npar un lanceur canadien en une saison et il est devenu seulement le deuxi\u00e8me\nlanceur de l\u2019histoire des Majeures \u00e0 faire au moins 200 victimes en 161 manches\nlanc\u00e9es ou moins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parmi les lanceurs de la Ligue am\u00e9ricaine\nayant au moins 160 manches lanc\u00e9es au compteur, Paxton a termin\u00e9 au troisi\u00e8me\nrang avec 11,68 K par neuf manches lanc\u00e9es, quatri\u00e8me dans le ratio\nretraits\/buts sur balles (4,95), septi\u00e8me pour la moyenne WHIP (1,10) et\nneuvi\u00e8me pour la moyenne au b\u00e2ton contre lui (,224).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il connait d\u2019ailleurs un bon d\u00e9but de\nsaison avec sa nouvelle \u00e9quipe. En sept d\u00e9parts jusqu\u2019ici avec les Yankees, il\naffiche un dossier de 3-2, une moyenne de points m\u00e9rit\u00e9s de 3,11 et 52 retraits\nsur des prises en 37 manches et deux tiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

En plus de ses performances sur le terrain,\nPaxton a aussi contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 plusieurs \u00e9v\u00e9nements caritatifs dans la grande\nr\u00e9gion de Vancouver. Il a fait don de plusieurs objets autographi\u00e9s et de\nbillets de baseball en plus d\u2019enseigner b\u00e9n\u00e9volement l\u2019art de lancer aux jeunes\nde la r\u00e9gion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
