St. Marys, Ont. \u2013 One had one of the best rookie seasons ever by a Canadian pitcher at the major league level, while the other set a career-high with 15 wins, including 10 in a row at the end of the regular season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes,\nMike Soroka (Calgary, Alta.) and James Paxton (Ladner, B.C.) enjoyed outstanding\nmajor league seasons in 2019. But so, too, did Montreal-born slugger Vladimir\nGuerrero Jr., who made his much anticipated big league debut \u2013 and hard-throwing\nright-hander Rowan Wick (North Vancouver, B.C.). And four other Canadians \u2013\nJosh Naylor (Mississauga, Ont.), Cal Quantrill (Port Hope, Ont.), Jordan Romano\n(Markham, Ont.) and Abraham Toro (Longueuil, Que.) \u2013 also made their major\nleague debuts this season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And\nwhile those Canadians were starring in North America, Jamie Romak (London,\nOnt.) was belting 29 home runs and setting career-highs in doubles (28) and\nwalks (73) in 137 games with the Korean Baseball Organization\u2019s SK Wyverns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, Kelsey Lalor was\nstarring for the Canadian Women\u2019s National Team. The Red Deer, Alta., native\nwent 9-for-16 (.563 batting average) to help Canada secure a bronze medal at\nthe 2019 COPABE Women\u2019s Baseball Pre Worlds tournament in August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So in\na year with so many highlights, how do you choose which Canadian stood out the\nmost?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s the dilemma the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame\nfaces, and they would like your input to determine Canada\u2019s top performer as\nthey prepare to choose their 2019 James \u201cTip\u201d O\u2019Neill Award winner. This honour\nis given out annually to the player judged to have excelled in individual\nachievement and team contribution while adhering to baseball\u2019s highest ideals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nHall encourages you to vote for the players you think are worthy of this award by noon E.T. on Wednesday, November 20<\/strong>.\nYou can e-mail your top three choices (please be clear on your first, second\nand third selections) to baseball@baseballhalloffame.ca or you can vote on the\nHall\u2019s website at www.baseballhalloffame.ca<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fan\nvotes will be l'un<\/strong> of the criteria\nthe Hall will take into account when selecting the winner, which will be\nannounced on December 4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s\na summary of the prime contenders (and their 2019 accomplishments) in\nalphabetical order. (The Hall also welcomes write-in votes for players not on\nthis list):<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Jim Adduci (Burnaby, B.C.)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 34-year-old first baseman\/outfielder\nbatted .301 with 108 hits \u2013 including 12 home runs \u2013 in 105 games for the\nTriple-A Iowa Cubs this season. For his efforts, he was named the first baseman\non Minor League Baseball\u2019s Chicago Cubs\u2019 Organization All-Star Team. He also played\ntwo games with the big league Cubs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phillippe Aumont (Gatineau, Que.)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This\n6-foot-7 right-hander posted an 8-4 record with a 2.65 ERA in 18 starts for the\nindependent Can Am League\u2019s Ottawa Champions. For his performance, he was named\nthe league\u2019s Pitcher of the Year. Aumont also picked up wins in both of his\nstarts for the silver medal-winning Canadian national team at the Pan Am Games\nin July, tossing a combined 13 shutouts innings against Argentina and\nNicaragua. His dominance on the international stage continued when he threw\neight scoreless innings for Canada in their 3-0 win over Cuba in the opening\ngame of the WSBC Premier12 tournament earlier this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jordan Balazovic (Mississauga, ON)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\n19 combined appearances \u2013 including 18 starts \u2013 between class-A and class-A\nAdvanced in the Minnesota Twins\u2019 organization, this 6-foot-5 right-hander collected\neight wins and recorded a 2.69 ERA while striking out 129 batters in 93-2\/3\ninnings. For his efforts, he was selected to participate in the 2019 Futures\nGame. He was also part of the pitching staff of the Canadian national team that\nwon silver at the Pan Am Games in July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vladimir Guerrero fils (Montr\u00e9al, QC)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

This 20-year-old slugger made\nhis much anticipated major league debut with the Toronto Blue Jays on April 26.\nHe proceeded to play in 123 games and hit .272 with 15 home runs, 26 doubles and\n69 RBIs. Among American League rookies, he was first in games (123), hits (126)\nand doubles (26), second in at bats (464) and third in RBIs (69) and walks (46).\nDuring the season, he was named the American League Player of the Week twice\n(May 19 and August 4) and finished second in the Home Run Derby at the All-Star\nGame. Guerrero Jr. also led all Canadian major leaguers in RBIs and was named\nto Baseball America\u2019s All-Rookie Team. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kelsey Lalor (Red Deer, Alta.)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This left-handed hitting\noutfielder went 9-for-16 (.563 batting average) \u2013 including a double and a home\nrun \u2013 to help Canada\u2019s national squad secure a bronze medal at the 2019 COPABE\nWomen\u2019s Baseball Pre Worlds tournament in Mexico in August. In that competition,\nshe also scored eight runs, recorded eight walks and finished with an .813\nslugging percentage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Russell Martin (East York,\nOnt.)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After\nbeing dealt by the Toronto Blue Jays back to the Los Angeles Dodgers in January,\nthis 36-year-old catcher would post a .337 on-base percentage and belt six home\nruns in 83 games. He added a home run, a double and four RBIs in the Dodgers\u2019\n10-4 win in Game 3 of their National League Division Series against the\neventual World Champion Washington Nationals. Martin also showed off his arm by\ntossing four scoreless innings in four regular season pitching appearances. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Josh\nNaylor (Mississauga, Ont.)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A first-round\npick of the Miami Marlins in 2015, Naylor made his big league debut with the\nSan Diego Padres on May 24. The 22-year-old slugger proceeded to bat .249 with\neight home runs, 15 doubles and 32 RBIs in 94 big league contests. The\nleft-handed hitting Canuck finished in the top 15 among National League rookies\nin walks, games and doubles. He also hit .314 with 10 home runs, while posting\na .547 slugging percentage, in 54 Triple-A games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"'Neill<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Tyler O\u2019Neill (Maple Ridge, C.-B.)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This muscular 24-year-old split\nthe season between the St. Louis Cardinals and the club\u2019s Triple-A and Double-A\naffiliates. In 60 big league contests, he batted .262 and clubbed five home\nruns, while his combined minor league numbers (between Double-A and Triple-A)\nincluded 13 home runs and a .509 slugging percentage in 47 games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

James Paxton (Ladner, C.-B.)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

After being traded to the New\nYork Yankees in November 2018, Paxton proceeded to register a career-best 15 wins\n\u2013 including 10 in a row at the end of the season. In total, in 150 2\/3 innings\nacross 29 starts, the 2018 Tip O\u2019Neill Award winner went 15-6 with a 3.82 ERA and\nstruck out 186 batters. In the playoffs, the hard-throwing southpaw outpitched Houston\nAstros\u2019 ace Justin Verlander in Game 5 of the American League Championship\nSeries, allowing just one run in six innings, while striking out nine, to\nrecord his first post-season win. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cal Quantrill (Port Hope, ON)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Selected in the first round by the Padres in the 2016 MLB draft,\nQuantrill made his big league debut with the club on May 1. In 23 big league\nappearances \u2013 including 18 starts \u2013 he went 6-8 with a 5.16 ERA and had 89\nstrikeouts in 103 innings. He was at his best in July when he registered two\nwins and posted a 1.69 ERA in four starts. The 24-year-old right-hander finished\nsixth among National League rookies in wins and eighth in starts and innings\npitched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jamie Romak (London, ON)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This right-handed hitting\nslugger enjoyed his third successful season with the SK Wyverns of the Korean\nBaseball Organization. He batted .276 with 29 home runs (tied for second in the\nKBO) and 95 RBIs in 137 games, while setting career-highs in doubles (28) and\nwalks (73). Romak also had 86 runs, a .508 slugging percentage and an .882 OPS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mike Soroka (Calgary, Alta.)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Mike<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

In one of the greatest rookie\nseasons ever by a Canadian pitcher, this 22-year-old right-hander went 13-4 and\nposted a 2.68 ERA while striking out 142 in 174-2\/3 innings, for the Atlanta\nBraves. His ERA ranked third in the National League, while his road ERA (1.35)\nwas the best in the circuit. Among National League rookie hurlers, he had the\nbest ERA, was third in wins and fourth in games started, innings pitched and\nstrikeouts. For his efforts, Soroka finished second in the National League\nRookie of the Year voting and sixth in the Cy Young Award voting. He also\nearned a win in Game 3 of the Braves\u2019 National League Division Series against\nthe St. Louis Cardinals when he limited the Cards to one run on two hits, while\nstriking out seven, in seven innings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Abraham Toro (Longueuil,\nQue.)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After batting a combined .324\nwith 17 home runs and a .527 slugging percentage in 114 games in Double-A and\nTriple-A in the Houston Astros\u2019 organization, this switch-hitting Canadian made\nhis big league debut on August 22. In 25 games for the American League pennant\nwinners, he batted .218 with two home runs. One of his homers was a two-run\nshot at Rogers Centre that accounted for the only two runs in Justin\nVerlander\u2019s no-hitter against the Blue Jays on September 1. His minor league\nefforts earned him Astros\u2019 Minor League Player of the Year honours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Joey<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Joey Votto (Etobicoke, ON)\n<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This veteran Cincinnati Reds first baseman continued his\nexcellent major league career by leading all Canadian big leaguers in games\n(142), hits (137), doubles (32) and walks (76). In all, he batted .261, posted\na .357 on-base percentage and had 15 home runs in 2019. His best month was June\nwhen he registered a .390 on-base percentage, a .506 slugging percentage and an\n.896 on-base plus slugging percentage (OPS) in 24 games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rowan Wick (North Vancouver, C.-B.)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n

This hard-throwing\nright-hander developed into a go-to reliever for the Chicago Cubs in 2019. In\n31 big league appearances, he recorded a 2.43 ERA and struck out 35 batters in\n33-1\/3 innings. He was most effective in the season\u2019s final month when he\nposted a 0.90 ERA in nine appearances. Wick was also dominant in Triple-A, registering\na 1.80 ERA in 27 games, while striking out 44 batters in 35 innings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nick\nPivetta (Victoria, B.C.) and Jordan Romano (Markham, Ont.) also appeared in the\nbig leagues in 2019, while Scott Mathieson (Vancouver, B.C.) continued to serve\nas a reliable reliever in his final season with the Yomiuri Giants of the Japan\nCentral League. He announced his retirement from professional baseball at the\nend of the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
