Non prot\u00e9g\u00e9 par les Red Sox de Boston lors du rep\u00eachage d\u2019expansion en 1976, les Blue Jays de Toronto ont mis la main sur celui qui allait devenir l\u2019un des joueurs les plus populaires aupr\u00e8s des partisans. Ernie Whitt a jou\u00e9 pour les Jays de 1977 \u00e0 1989, disputant 1218 parties, le quatri\u00e8me plus haut total de l\u2019histoire de la concession. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Un receveur fiable d\u00e9fensivement, l\u2019athl\u00e8te originaire du Michigan a aussi fait parler son b\u00e2ton, cognant au moins dix circuits par saison pendant huit saisons de suite \u00e0 partir de 1982. Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 le receveur des Jays au cours de neuf matchs d\u2019ouverture et a connu sa meilleure campagne en 1985 gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 ses 19 circuits, son invitation au match des \u00e9toiles et un championnat de division, le premier de l\u2019histoire du club. Le 14 septembre 1987, Whitt a claqu\u00e9 trois circuits en un match alors que les Jays \u00e9tablissaient un record des Majeures avec dix longues balles au cours de cette rencontre. En douze campagnes avec les Jays, Whitt a r\u00e9ussi 888 coups s\u00fbrs et 131 circuits et a produit 518 points. Il a ensuite jou\u00e9 une saison avec les Braves d\u2019Atlanta en 1990 et une derni\u00e8re avec les Orioles de Baltimore en 1991.<\/span><\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s sa carri\u00e8re de joueur, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 instructeur et g\u00e9rant dans l\u2019organisation des Jays. Il a aussi connu beaucoup de succ\u00e8s comme g\u00e9rant avec les \u00e9quipes nationales du Canada. \u00c0 sa premi\u00e8re exp\u00e9rience la t\u00eate de l\u2019\u00e9quipe aux Jeux panam\u00e9ricains de 1999 \u00e0 Winnipeg, les hommes de Whitt ont surpris les Am\u00e9ricains lors du match de la m\u00e9daille de bronze. En 2003, ils ont de nouveau doubl\u00e9 les Am\u00e9ricains, d\u00e9crochant l\u2019un des deux laissez-passer pour les Jeux olympiques d\u2019Ath\u00e8nes. Sous sa f\u00e9rule, le Canada a termin\u00e9 quatri\u00e8me aux J.O. Puis, en 2006, Whitt et les siens ont surpris le monde du baseball en d\u00e9faisant les Am\u00e9ricains une fois de plus lors de la premi\u00e8re pr\u00e9sentation de la Classique mondiale.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
