D\u00e8s l\u2019\u00e2ge de 14 ans, alors qu\u2019il mesurait d\u00e9j\u00e0 six pieds, Reggie Cleveland lan\u00e7ait contre des joueurs plus vieux que lui. Le lanceur droitier a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9couvert \u00e0 Swift Current par un g\u00e9rant d\u2019exposition, Sam Shapiro, qui a convaincu son ami Red Schoendienst, le g\u00e9rant des Cardinals de Saint-Louis, de l\u2019embaucher. L\u2019entente, qui incluait un bonus \u00e0 la signature de 500 $, a \u00e9t\u00e9 conclue en 1965 entre Cleveland et les Cards.<\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s environ quatre ans dans les rangs mineurs, Cleveland a fait ses d\u00e9buts dans les Ligues majeures le 1er octobre 1969. Ce n\u2019est qu\u2019\u00e0 partir de la saison 1971 qu\u2019il deviendra un lanceur r\u00e9gulier \u00e0 Saint-Louis. Il gagnera \u00e0 ce moment 12 matchs et en compl\u00e8tera 10 ce qui lui valut le titre de recrue de l\u2019ann\u00e9e selon la revue Sporting News. L\u2019ann\u00e9e suivante, il a sign\u00e9 14 victoires et compl\u00e9t\u00e9 11 matchs avant de faire un peu mieux encore en 1973 avec une fiche de 14-10 et une moyenne de points m\u00e9rit\u00e9s de 3,01.<\/p>\n

En 1975, Cleveland est devenu le premier lanceur canadien \u00e0 d\u00e9buter un match de la S\u00e9rie mondiale, obtenant la balle pour le cinqui\u00e8me match de la s\u00e9rie. Le droitier a \u00e9galement lanc\u00e9 en rel\u00e8ve pour les Rangers du Texas et les Brewers de Milwaukee lors de sa derni\u00e8re campagne en carri\u00e8re. Au total, il a r\u00e9colt\u00e9 105 victoires dans les Majeures, ce qui le place au quatri\u00e8me rang de tous les Canadiens derri\u00e8re Fergie Jenkins (284), Ryan Dempster (132) et Kirk McCaskill (106).
