CHICAGO — A scary situation could have been worse for pitcher Blake Hawksworth, though he’s still a little beat up. Hawksworth was leveled by a line drive off the bat of the Cubs’ Sam Fuld on Saturday. The ball struck him in the face, near the mouth, and left him sprawled on the field for several tenuous minutes. He left the field under his own power, escorted to the clubhouse by a team trainer who was holding a towel to his face to control the bleeding.
“No damage to his cheekbone or head,” said manager Tony La Russa. “He should be here [shortly].”
