Né en 1949 à Toronto, William Humber est reconnu comme le premier historien du baseball au Canada. En plus des nombreuses conférences sur l’histoire du baseball canadien qu’il a donné partout en Amérique du nord, Humber a écrit plusieurs livres importants sur le sujet, dont et Diamonds of the North : A Concise History of Baseball in Canada (1983), Let’s Play Ball: Inside the Perfect Game (1989), The Baseball Book and Trophy (1993) and Diamonds of the North: A Concise History of Baseball in Canada (1995).
Maintenant résident de Bowmanville (ON), il a été un acteur important de la fondation du chapitre de Toronto de SABR (Society of American Baseball Research) et de la première convention en 1981. Il est à ce jour le seul Canadien à avoir été élu au conseil d’administration de SABR, en 1982, 1983 et 1989.
En 1979, il a mis sur pied le cours appelé « Le camp d’entraînement pour les fans de baseball » au Collège Seneca, cours qui est toujours donné aujourd’hui par Humber lui-même. En 1989, il a été l’instigateur de l’exposition sur les 150 ans du baseball au Canada au Musée Royal de l’Ontario.
For his contributions, Humber was made an honorary inductee into the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame in 2004 and is a recipient of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal, which is awarded to Canadians who have made outstanding and exemplary contributions to their communities or to Canada as a whole. Humber also serves on the selection committee for Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame and for the Clarington Sports Hall of Fame, and in 2006, he was elected to the Black Ice Hockey and Sports Hall of Fame in the writers category. He continues to be a regular contributor on baseball matters to radio and TV shows throughout Canada and the U.S. Bill received the Order of Canada in 2021.
