The Blue Jays took the baseball world by surprise on Monday morning when it was learned they had agreed to terms with free-agent catcher Russell Martin on a five-year contract, and on Tuesday they formally announced the signing of the three-time All-Star.
The deal will net Martin $82 million over five years — the largest free-agent contract during general manager Alex Anthopoulos’ tenure with Toronto. Prior to the Martin signing, Anthopoulos had never gone more than three years or $16 million in total value on any free-agent contract.
