The Blue Jays were only a year old when the first inaugural Pearson Cup game was scheduled for June 29, 1978 at Olympic Stadium in Montréal. From 1978 until 1986, eight games were played between the Blue Jays and the Expos (no game was played in 1981 due to the players’ strike). In those eight meetings, each team won three, and they ended in a tie twice. At the same time, around $530,000 was raised during the games for Amateur Baseball in Canada.
After the 1986 season, a Pearson Cup game was not scheduled for 1987, purportedly because the two teams could not settle on an agreed upon date. The next Pearson Cup contest would not be played until 2003.
