Roy Hartsfield, the first manager of the Toronto Blue Jays, passed away on Saturday at his daughter’s Atlanta-area home. He was 85.
Hartsfield’s death was the result of complications from liver cancer, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, which first reported the news.
As a player, Hartsfield spent three years in the Major Leagues as a second baseman for the Boston Braves from 1950-52. Over that span, Hartsfield registered a .273 average to go with 13 homers and 14 stolen bases. After being traded to the Brooklyn Dodgers, Hartsfield retired from playing and made the transition to coaching. During his subsequent 19-year run with the Dodgers organization, Hartsfield worked under managers Tommy Lasorda and Walter Alston and successfully piloted several Minor League clubs.
