GARY CARTER REMEMBERED A YEAR AFTER HIS DEATH

By DAVE KAUFMAN, SPECIAL TO THE GAZETTE

MONTREAL — Even at the end of his life, Gary Carter always maintained a  positive attitude.

Kimmy Bloemers, Carter’s youngest daughter, said her father spent the last  weeks of his life at peace, surrounded by those he loved most and trying to  bring comfort to his family.

“When he was in the hospital and he was responsive he would actually tell us: ‘Hey, it hasn’t been so bad,’” Bloemers said.

Reached this week at her home in South Florida, Bloemers, 32, said “it’s  crazy to think that it’s already been a year since he’s been gone.”

Carter, nicknamed The Kid, was the face of the Expos and baseball in Canada  in the late 1970s and early ’80s. The Hall of Famer passed away one year ago  Saturday at age 57.

Bloemers said she wanted to share some stories from the last weeks of her  father’s life, which had not been discussed outside of the family’s inner  circle.
