John Olerud

Cap

1993

This is a 1993 Toronto Blue Jays baseball cap, worn and autographed by John Olerud. The 1993 season was the Blue Jays second back-to-back World Series Championship season.

While this cap belonged to John Olerud and was part of his Toronto Blue Jays uniform during the 1993 season, Olerud rarely wore the cap, as he preferred to wear batting helmets even while fielding. Olerud suffered a brain aneurysm in January 1989, collapsing during a workout while training at college. He had surgery that February and was back playing baseball for his college team by April. Olerud was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 1989 MLB June Amateur Draft and joined the Toronto Blue Jays later that same summer, never playing in the minors. At his doctor’s recommendations, Olerud wore a protective helmet at all times to protect his head during his recovery. Olerud continued to wear protective batting helmets rather than baseball caps for the rest of his professional career.
