Team of the Week

Congratulations to this week’s Team of the Week: the Royal York Cardinals 9U Select Girls!

With the success that these Cardinals have had this season, you’d never guess that they came together as a team only a year ago! When this team was formed in 2024, they were (and remain) the only all-girls 9U Select team in Ontario.

While the program was launched successfully, the wins were limited. Not to be deterred, the Cardinals put in the work in the off-season, practicing three times a week to prepare for 2025. Their efforts have paid off massively! Per their nomination, “We have transformed our team into one of the top teams in the province, showing that you can achieve anything you set your mind to.” With an outstanding record of 22-7 through 2025, this team has also won two tournaments! In their most recent tournament, playing against all-boys teams, the Cardinals went 5-0, outscoring opponents 96-29 to take home the gold.

This team is proof that girls will excel in baseball when given the opportunity to do so. The Cardinals are hopeful that their success will be “an inspiration to young girls and baseball players everywhere.” They want to see the growth of competitive all-girls teams so that female baseball players in other communities can have the same opportunities as those in the Royal York Baseball League. That’s a lot of pressure on a 9U team, but these ball players have proven that they are more than up to the challenge.

Congratulations, Cardinals, on being selected as this week’s Team of the Week! Keep being the inspiring, talented team of role models that you’ve proven yourselves to be!

Go Cardinals, go!!
