Welcome to our latest virtual exhibit: No Baseball on Sundays!

On May 7, 1950, the first Sunday baseball game was held in the city of Toronto. The history-making game was the culmination of years of intense debate, lobbying and effort to combat Toronto’s strict Blue Laws, which prohibited non-religious activities on Sundays. Although the laws began to slowly be repealed, thanks in part to baseball and baseball fans, the repercussions of the laws were long-lasting. 

In this exhibit, we will demonstrate baseball’s role in changing restrictive Toronto laws to make sports in the city more accessible and enjoyable. From the first Sunday baseball game in 1950, to the end of the alcohol prohibition at Exhibition Stadium in 1982, we will examine the role of baseball as a changemaker in Toronto in making sports more accessible to everyone.
