Tobacco companies were the first to produce baseball cards in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These cards were inserted into cigarette packs, partly to help stiffen the packaging, but also to promote brand loyalty. Featuring popular players of the time, these inserts became highly sought-after collectables, linking America’s pastime with a growing tobacco industry.
As public health concerns about smoking grew and restrictions on tobacco advertising increased, the tobacco companies’ presence in the card market began to fade, however, the idea of pairing cards with consumable products was far from over.
